Farm Dam Stocking

Many landholders like to establish populations of redclaw in their farm dams to provide the family with a “feed” of redclaw and give the kids some fun catching them.

10,000 craylings, only a handful! As an added advantage they also keep the dam cleaner and reduce the amount of water plants, lower organic loads which helps keep the water healthy.

This style of redclaw production is called “extensive farming” and consists of low stocking densities and little or no feeding, aeration etc.

The natural production of the pond will provide food but it wouldn’t hurt to provide habitat for the crayfish to help keep them happy and to increase survival.

Each Australian state has different laws pertaining to farm dam stocking and you should check with the relevant authority.

For example in Queensland you can’t stock redclaw out of their natural habitat range unless you take precaution to ensure they can not escape (view DPI website) In Victoria red claw are considered a pest and you need a permit to bring them into the state.

Adult male redclawTo establish a healthy population we recommend stocking at about 1 crayling per square metre.

Ideally the dam should be as predator free as possible.

Redclaw don’t dig tunnels and won’t compromise the integrity of dam walls.

Minimum order is a 1000 craylings That might sound a lot but each crayling only weighs .02 grams so that is only 20 grams of hatchlings.
