Many landholders like to establish populations of redclaw in their farm dams to provide the family with a “feed” of redclaw and give the kids some fun catching them.
As an added advantage they also keep the dam cleaner and reduce the amount of water plants, lower organic loads which helps keep the water healthy.
This style of redclaw production is called “extensive farming” and consists of low stocking densities and little or no feeding, aeration etc.
The natural production of the pond will provide food but it wouldn’t hurt to provide habitat for the crayfish to help keep them happy and to increase survival.
Each Australian state has different laws pertaining to farm dam stocking and you should check with the relevant authority first.
For example in Queensland you can’t stock redclaw into areas where they do not occur naturally. Please view DPI website for more information.
If you’re in other states of Australia please contact your local authorities first, but in brief :
Victoria and South Australia: redclaw are considered a pest and you need a permit to bring them into the state.
West Australia: It’s ok to stock north of Perth (please consult local authorities)
NT: as far as we aware there are no problems.

To establish a healthy population we recommend stocking at about 1 crayling per square metre.
Ideally the dam should be as predator free as possible.
Redclaw don’t dig tunnels and won’t compromise the integrity of dam walls.
Minimum order is a 1000 craylings. That might sound like a lot but each craylings weighs 0.02 grams; so that’s only 20 grams of craylings!
